The Acheron River is a mystical river located in Epirus, Greece. Its source is near the village Vovousa and it is 104 km long, flowing through the Ioannina, Thesprotia and Preveza regional units before joining the Acheloos River. It is known for its dark greenish-blue waters and its many rapids, making it an ideal destination for rafting and kayaking. According to Greek mythology, the Acheron is a branch of the underworld and a place of punishment for those who committed wrongs in life. It is also a place of healing, and the ancients believed that the souls of the dead had to cross the river on their journey to the afterlife, and that they were judged by Charon, the ferryman. It was also said to be a place of torment for those who had committed sins, and many people would come to bathe in its waters in order to cure their ailments. Ancient Greek philosophers such as Socrates and Plato believed that the Acheron was the source of all wisdom, and that those who bathed in its waters could gain a greater understanding of the world around them.
